THE WEEKND: From underground anonymity to a superstar
Best known for making “Blinding Lights”; he is a Canadian singer and performer that has created such hits as “Can’t feel my face”, “star boy”,
“Save your tears”. While building his own career as an artist, he has become one of the best modern artists in the music industry.
Abel Tesfaye was born on February 16 1990 in Toronto, Canada. He’s the son of Ethiopian immigrants and his first language was Amharic. When he was in grade 11, he quit school and left home. Eventually, he had a job and at the same time began writing songs about drugs, casual sex, etc.
In 2010, he decided to upload a few songs under the channel name “Weeknd”; he worked with the producer Jeremy Rose. The songs drew the attention of everyone from Drake to the New York Times.
With Drake as a fan and patron, Tesfaye had greater access to recording opportunities, and by March 2011 he had assembled a nine-song mixtape, House of Balloons, which he released as a free download.
The album gained critical attention and was selected for Canada's Polaris Music Prize. Tesfaye made his first public appearance as The Weeknd at a Toronto nightclub in July of that year. He released two more free tracks in 2011, Thursday and Echoes of Silence.
The Weekend's success continued with Starboy (2016), which featured collaborations with Kendrick Lamar and Daft Punk. The cinematic and introspective Blinding Lights (2019) was critically acclaimed and, like its previous release, debuted at the top of the charts and was the ticket to her performing at the Super Bowl halftime show in 2021.
My favorite songs are blinding lights and Can't feel my face. I met him for those songs. He is kind, creative, energetic and passionate.
He has commented in interviews that he has been inspired by Michael Jackson to make his songs and choreographies.
