It lived its origins in London on the occasion of the program The X Factor, at first it was composed of a quintet formed by Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, who were sponsored by Simon Cowell.

• Niall James Horan is an Irish singer and songwriter. He participated in The X Factor as a member of One Direction and came in third place. Despite this, Simon Cowell paid a contract for the group to sign with the Syco label. 

• Harry Edward Styles is a British singer, songwriter and actor. He began his singing career in 2010 as a member of the boy band One Direction, with whom he participated in the program The X Factor and came in third place.

• Louis William Tomlinson is a British singer and songwriter. He began his career as a member of the boy band One Direction, to which he was included after auditioning on The X Factor. The group reached the final of the program and came in third place.

• Liam James Payne is a British singer, songwriter and guitarist, he was a member of the boy band One Direction. After auditioning on The X Factor and being accepted, judge Nicole Scherzinger suggested that Liam be part of a group called One Direction along with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, 

• Zain Javadd Malik, known simply as Zayn, is a British singer and songwriter, best known for being a member of the boy band One Direction.

In 2011 their first single, titled "What Makes You Beautiful", was released and reached number one in the main music charts in the UK and Ireland, earning them numerous accolades, including a Brit Award for best British single.

Their first album, Up All Night, also debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, making One Direction the first British group to reach that position with their debut album. As a promotion, the band would play several concerts in Europe, America, and Oceania.

In 2012, the second album in One Direction's discography, Take Me Home, was released.

One Direction's third album, Midnight Memories, was released in 2013.

One Direction's fourth album was released a year later, Four, with the singles "Steal My Girl" and "Night Changes".

In March 2015, Zayn Malik would announce his departure from the band while they were still in the middle of touring and recording their fifth album. On September 22 of that same year, the official title of their fifth studio album would be released: Made in the AM.

By May 2017, all band members had released solo singles, in 2018, it was discovered that the group had shut down the company that managed their tours, writing off the union.
