The Sahara Marathon
I really like the Sahara Marathon because I find it very amazing since it’s an ultramarathon
that is about 250 km, which is approximately the distance of six regular marathons. This
marathon is held every year in Southern Morocco, in the Sahara Desert as the Marathon’s
name says. It was first established in 1986, which was 37 years ago. It surprises me how
many people can run this marathon since over 1,024 runners assist. The weather in the
Sahara Desert is extremely hot and people still manage to do the marathon, I think that is
very amazing. People even say it’s the toughest footrace on earth because it’s extremely
difficult to finish, but in 2019, 96% of the 783 runners completed the event.
The event is open to runners and walkers, with several stages, free style, and with food-self-
sufficiency. Experts recommend preparing yourself at least six months before the event
starts. You should aim to run 150 to 190 miles a week, increasing the distance as time goes
on!
